Peale’s Dolphin bow-riding

A playful Peale’s Dolphin rides the bow of our inflatable near Carcass Island off West Falkland Island. These dolphins milled for hours in the bay just for the chance to ride along with us. Surf’s up!

Antarctic Fur Seal pups at play

Here at the dilapidated old whaling station in Stromness Bay the Antarctic Fur Seals have literally taken over the grounds. Hundreds of playful pups are on the beach to greet us as we land at the site where Ernest Shackleton finished his amazing journey from Elephant Island. These curious pups will come right to you if you simply lie down on the beach and wait!

King Penguin Chick

February 23, 2006 King Penguin chick

St, Andrews Harbor on South Georgia Island is home to over 150,000 nesting pairs of King Penguins! As far as the eye can reach there are penguins surrounding us. Parents on eggs, parents feeding newborn chicks, and older “okum boy” chicks all wandering around the edges of the colony. We even encounter a rare melanistic (black) King Penguin.

Adult Macaroni Penguin

Here in Cooper Bay on the Southeastern-most extremity of South Georgia Island we encounter these lovely Macaroni Penguins among the tussock grass. With their red eyes and colorful crests these little penguins are sure to be one of everybody’s favorites! I even caught one in mid-jump as another animal looks on!

Adult Fin Whale

We leave Elephant Island and Antarctica behind as we cruise the Scotia Sea towards South Georgia Island, just as Sir Ernest Shackleton did 90 years ago in the 20 foot James Caird. Along the way we encounter a pod of 8 Adult Fin Whales, who are moving so fast we can barely keep up with them!

Chinstrap Penguins

February 17, 2006 Adult Chinstrap Penguin

Chinstrap Penguins may be the most interesting of all the species we encounter here in Antarctica. They are often seen “porpoising” along side the ship or hauled out onto icebergs as we pass by. Their facial markings are so strikingly beautiful!

Wilhelmina Bay

February 16, 2006 Adult Humpback Whale fluke-up dive

This afternoon in Wilhelmina Bay we encounter several Humpback Whales feeding on krill in the area. These southern hemisphere animals grow much larger than their northern hemisphere relatives due to the incredible abundance of krill as a food resource.

Petermann Island, Antarctica

February 15, 2006 Gentoo Penguin Chick

Petermann Island, Antarctica – This morning we are surrounded in Gentoo Penguins, adults and chicks alike! The chicks are curious about everything around them, be it my camera or a gear bag left on the beach. The sight, the sound, and the smell of these penguins are simply overwhelming! Amazing!

Orca Killer Whale in Antarctic Pennisula

Orca (Killer Whale) attacking a 25 foot long Minke Whale
Happy Valentine’s Day! This morning we awoke early to the sight of a pod of 6 Orcas (Killer Whales) attacking, killing, and eating a Minke Whale here off the Antarctic Peninsula! The pod of six Killer Whales worked together to strip the 25 foot long Minke Whale of its lower ventral pleats and the blubber of the throat. The second image is actually an Orca surfacing with a piece of Minke Blubber in its mouth!
