Seal of approval!

January, 2007

The many faces of the Weddell Seal all get my approval! This is the most southerly breeding of all the pinnipeds in the world, and when it is hauled out on an ice floe it tends to ignore noisy human intruders. I do wonder about the split end to the tongue in the animal pictured above. If anyone knows whether this feature is normal in this species, or just unique to this particular animal, I would appreciate an e-mail as I haven't been able to find the answer to this question in the literature! Thanks!
