Green Heron in Mangroves

February 4, 2006

A slow Zodiac ride through the mangroves in Magdalena Bay on the Baja Peninsula yields a close up view of this beautiful Green Heron hiding among the leaves. Shy and secretive this bird is a wonderful find to photograph and watch!

California Gray Whale Spy-hop!

February 3, 2006

Spy-hop! This morning in Magdalena Bay on the Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula this curious adult California Gray Whale decided to check me out. Lifting its head completely out of the water in order to look around at my boat she made eye contact with me. Who is really watching whom?

Blue Whale Fluke-up Dive

January 25, 2006

A fluke-up dive by an adult Blue Whale before breakfast starts another perfect day here in Baja California. I estimate this animal to be almost 70 feet long and 180,000 pounds! To be in the presence of the largest animal to ever roam the earth is simply breath taking! Late winter into early spring is the time to see these animals here near Isla Carmen in the Gulf of California, Mexico.

Whale Shark!

January 12, 2006

Whale Sharks! Seven of them early this morning just outside of La Paz, Baja California Sur. This one is only a baby at 18 feet! Their curiosity keeps them around the panga as we idle in the morning calm. A chance to snorkel in clear water with the largest fish on the planet is just too tempting so I don my mask and fins and slip into the water.
